Tokyo (東京) is the political, economic and cultural center of Japan and the de facto capital. Located in the central part of the Japanese archipelago and in the southern part of the Kanto region, it consists of 23 central wards, multiple municipalities and islands in the Pacific Ocean. The land that extends from east to west is rich in ups and downs from lowlands under 4m above sea level to mountains up to 2000m.
Tokyo "東京" means "Eastern Capital"s
Before 1868, Tokyo was known as Edo, a small castle town in the 16th century. It became the political center of Japan in 1603 when Tokugawa Ieyasu established a feudal government in 1868. In 1949, the Emperor and the functions of the capital city were transferred and the city was renamed 東京 “Eastern Capital”.

The center of politics, economy and culture in Japan.
It is also the center of the economy, with important political and administrative institutions such as the Diet Building and ministries, the Bank of Japan, and the Tokyo Stock Exchange. Headquarters of various companies and news organizations are gathered, and there are many universities, vocational schools, cultural facilities, etc. It is the largest consumer area in Japan where many people and goods gather from all over the world.
In the city center, people living in the suburbs such as Kanagawa, Chiba, and Saitama commute to work or school by train. The daytime population in the 23 wards of Tokyo is about 12 million. There are 3 million more people than at night. The terminal stations that connect the city center and the suburbs, around Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, and Shibuya, are called “sub-centers” and are especially visited by many people. Tokyo is one of the world’s leading cities in terms of both population and economic activity.
One of the world's leading cities with good security
Foreign tourists coming to Tokyo appreciate security, cleanliness, low pollution (water and air safety), an orderly society, and convenient transportation access. In fact, it has received the world’s top evaluation in various safety-related items. Ranked # 1 in the Top 10 Safe Cities in the Safe Cities Index 2019. The quality and access to health care services and safe, high-quality food are also highly regarded.
This will be a factor that should not be overlooked when considering immigration.
It is a prefecture with a small area and is the third from the bottom in terms of area. In that narrow space, it has so much variety. For the time being, the “wide range” from the east of the four northern islands to the south of Naha is subtracted, and even if it is only in the 23rd ward + Tama area *, it is as thick as a lot of local cities.
So, instead of grouping Tokyo as “Tokyo,” I think it would be even more fun if we changed our perspective and enjoyed diversity.
Damage and transformation
The transformation of Tokyo is inseparable from the history of devastating damage twice in the last 100 years. The first was the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and the second was a large air raid at the end of World War II. Every time Tokyo became a burnt field, people were forced to abandon the past and rebuild the city, envisioning new urban development, changing transportation networks, infrastructure, and even the way society should be.
