Japanese is written using three types of characters. hiragana, katakana, and kanji. Each kanji has its own meaning, but hiragana and katakana only represent sounds and have no meaning. In current Japanese, katakana is mainly used for writing foreign words and expressing sounds.
Japanese has three types of characters
Japanese writing characters are usually written using a combination of Hiragana (phonetic characters), Katakana (mainly used in foreign languages or sound expressions) and Kanji (ideographic characters).
Why are there three types of writing in Japanese?
In Japanese, it is difficult to understand the separation between words, particles, and auxiliary verbs using only hiragana and katakana. Therefore, kanji are needed to make a word easier to understand. So we need to use three different kinds of kanji, hiragana, and katakana.
漢 字 kanji
In Chinese characters, each character has some meaning. This is called an “ideographic character”.
ひらがな hiragana & カタカナ katakana
On the other hand, hiragana and katakana. For example, “あ” and “ア” are characters that mean only pronunciation, and the characters alone have no meaning. This is called “phonetic characters”.
We suggest you start learning Hiragana, then Katakana and then Kanji.
