Kyoto / South aria guide

This area extends south of Kyoto Station and includes Fushimi and Uji. Fushimi is world-famous for the Fushimi Inari-taisha shrine with its vermilion torii (shrine gates), and is also famous for sake brewing due to the clear water flowing through the shrine. The area is also dotted with places associated with the samurai of the end of the Edo period, such as Teradaya, making it a must-see for history buffs.

醍醐寺 / Daigoji

World Heritage Site Daigoji Temple. The temple is the head temple of the Daigo school of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. The temple houses a number of national treasures and important cultural properties, including the five-story pagoda.

伏見稲荷大社 / Fushimiinaritaisya

It is the head shrine of the 30,000 Inari shrines in Japan. The shrine, with its stately pavilions and auxiliary shrines, is worshipped by the general public as a god of good harvests and prosperous business. The numerous vermilion-lacquered torii gates on the approach from behind the main shrine to the inner shrine are known as “Senbon-torii” (a thousand torii).

平等院 / Byodoin

Byodoin is a single-storied temple located in Uji-Renge, Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture. The main deity is Amida Nyorai. It is widely known around the world for the Hōōō-dō (Phoenix Hall), a national treasure. The temple is also one of the components of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Cultural Properties of Ancient Kyoto,” which was registered in 1994.
