Notes on particle で

This particle is often referred to as the location particle or means particle, because it’s mainly used to mark locations, the means of doing something, materials something is made from, or a reason for something. Let’s first see the location-marking function.

Usage of the particle “で de”

1. Location of operation/action

 きのう　　　　           みせ　　 ていしょく　   た

昨日、あの店で 定食を食べた。

kinou anomisede teisyokuwo tabeta

I had a set meal at that restaurant yesterday.

  と しょ かん         べんきょう

図書館で 勉 強した。

tosyokandebenkyoushita

I studied at the library.

2.Means, methods, tools and materials

                                   き

ハサミで 切って ください。

 hasami de  ki t te   kudasa i

Cut with scissors.

                   し   き                                                                            で   き

この仕切りはプラスチックで出来ている。

 kono shikiri wa   purasuchi kku de dekite i ru

This divider is made of plastic.

3. Scope

ほっかいどう　　　　  らくのう　  　さか

北海道では 酪農が 盛んです。

hokkaidodewarakunougasakandesu

Dairy farming is thriving in Hokkaido.

＊When the meaning of contrast is entered, “で” for place + “は” for contrast = “では”.

にわ　 　いぬ　　    はし　　 まわ

庭で 犬が 走り 回って いる。

niwade inugahashiri mawattei ru

A dog is running around in the yard.

4. Limits and deadlines

いっかげつ　　   で  き

1ヶ月で 出来ますか。

 ikkagetsude dekimasuka

Can you do it in a month?

 さ ぎょう   　　　　 じ   かん     　 お

作業は、1時間で終わるでしょう。

 sagyouwa ichi ji kan de owaru desyou

The work would take one hour.

5. Cause / Reason

たいふう　　でんしゃ　  　と

台風で電車が止まった。

taifu de densya ga tomatta

The train stopped due to a typhoon.

あめ　  　ぬ　  　

雨で濡れてしまった。

amede nureteshi ma t ta

It got wet from the rain.
