West Tokyo Area Guide
Located on the west side of Tokyo’s 23 wards, the Tama area is also known as the Tokyo metropolitan area or Tama region.

吉祥寺 / Kichijyoji
Kichijoji is characterized by its parks, large commercial facilities, and bustling shopping district, as well as its easy access to Shibuya and Shinjuku. Kichijoji is characterized by two key features: easy access to the city center and an environment with many parks and greenery. It is rare to find an area that has both of these conditions, which is why it ranks high on the list of “Tokyo’s Best Places to Live.

Inokashira Park is a lush green park with a vast pond, a place of relaxation for citizen of Tokyo, and a famous cherry blossom viewing spot. The museum of Studio Ghibli, which has produced many animation masterpieces, is also located in the West Garden.
立川 / Tachikawa
Tachikawa City is located in the center and west of Tokyo.
JR Tachikawa Station, the gateway to the city, is a major transportation hub, served by the Chuo Line, Ome Line, Itsukaichi Line, and Nambu Line, as well as the Tama Monorail, which connects the Tama area from north to south, and extensive bus routes connecting to the surrounding cities. The area surrounding the station is the busiest in the Tama region, with a concentration of large commercial facilities including department stores, office buildings, and a wide variety of restaurants.
On the other hand, a short walk from the center of the city, you can enjoy the greenery of the vast National Showa Memorial Park, the Tamagawa-josui River running in the north, the Tama River in the south, the Zanbori River connecting the two, and one of Tokyo’s leading agricultural areas in the northern area, creating a peaceful and relaxing living environment surrounded by water and greenery.
Tachikawa’s charm lies in its compact and well-balanced combination of urban attractions such as convenience and liveliness with a rich and relaxing living environment.
National Showa Memorial Park is a national park covering a total area of 180 hectares, built on the site of the former Tachikawa Airfield. The park was planned to provide a place for a variety of recreational activities in a rich natural environment.
高尾山 / Takaosan / Mt. Takao
Takaosan is a 599 meter (m) high mountain located in Hachioji City, Tokyo. It is located in the Meiji-no-mori Takao National Park and the Tokyo Metropolitan Takao Jinba Nature Park. Located close to central Tokyo, the mountain is visited by many tourists and climbers throughout the year. It has long been considered a sacred mountain for Shugendo (mountain asceticism).
From the base of the mountain, visitors can take the cable car or lift to the midpoint of the mountain, which is about 472 meters above sea level.
There are also three walking routes, all of which take about 1 hour and 30 minutes to reach the summit.
It is a national monument where you can enjoy a leisurely hike in the mountains even on a day trip, and was designated a three-star Michelin star along with Mount Fuji in 2007.
